Unnecessary Words

Unnecessary words hurt you. That I sincerely regret.
I am truly sorry. Know you do have my highest respect
even on those things on which we don't see eye to eye.
I can't excuse my actions, nor need you expect I'd try
to spare myself consequence or fail to pay my debt.

No, it's not you, nothing you said ever posed a threat
nor challenge, not a single thing you need to correct.
No need to apologize back, that'd only give your reply
                                        unnecessary words.

You probably think I should just shut my mouth, I bet,
quit before all measure of my self-esteem's wrecked.
I don't think much before I speak, don't ask me why
     I don't - think, I mean - since to speak, I can't deny,
comes so easily, all I need do is breathe, and you get
                                        unnecessary words.
