              “The temple bell stops—
              but the sound keeps coming
              out of the flowers.”
                        —Bashō, as translated by Bly

I’m the darker side of Bashō’s exquisite image: my pen has stopped, the spark that drove it having died out; and all I’ve got left is an echo more weed than flower that just keeps going through the motions of the sounds the pen used to make.

And my muse is the emperor in Curse of the Golden Flower, who having lost all three male heirs in the space of an hour, sits casually eating a dumpling off the end of chopsticks while I the empress submit to drinking the lethal poison prepared by him for me.
