I’d Rather Be

"...and the dead shall be raised incorruptible,
                         and we shall be changed."
                         —I Corinthians 15:52 (KJV)
I'd rather be the one clothed in a bride's
pure white. This shroud in which my body prides,
I wear it so the voyeurs might see through
how dead inside I am. Oh what I'd do
to lie down where the newlywed resides
instead of sleeping off bent drunken tides
that wash me up adrift on rock, where hides
what I'll die as! A wife, is that not who
                         I'd rather be?
To know one who accepts me and provides,
to share with one who listens and confides,
in every moment old becoming new,
to rise beside my love, and it be you.
Just make me her. There's no one else besides
                         I'd rather be.

There seems to be a tone unrequited love in this one…not sure…still thinking about the poem.

this one was written for a close friend who has convinced herself that she is unchangeably corrupt to the point of death – it speaks words i do know her to want, in the hope that it may help give her the strength to voice them herself, to claim them as hers – with love, s.

Sara, this is so beautifully written and painfully true. I have been there and back. Amy
