     With your permission, let's call that the end
     for all intended purposes.  I tend
     to want to make things out like they'll endure
     another round or two beyond. But you're
     correct. I'll go with what you recommend.

     Besides, I'm tired of having to defend
     myself against mistrust. I'd rather spend
     what little we've got left on what's most sure,
                              with your permission.

     I can't say what I'll do. That will depend
     no longer on your will, not to offend
     that name you've worked so hard at keeping pure
     or whatever's your raison d'être de jure.
     You be my past. I'm fine as just your friend,
                              with your permission.
